What is parole and probation law?

Parole and probation law in Louisiana governs the release of individuals from prison before their sentence is complete, as well as the legal requirements for people convicted of a crime to be supervised in the community. In Louisiana, parole is a temporary release from prison and requires periodic reporting to a parole officer. Correctional officers decide when and if someone should be paroled and, if so, how long parole should last. Probation is an alternative to prison and is a period of supervision for individuals convicted of a crime. Probation is enforced through court orders that impose behavioral and legal restrictions on an offender that must be followed while under supervision. In addition, probationers may be required to participate in rehabilitative programs and may face drug testing, electronic monitoring, and a variety of restrictions on their movements. In each case, failure to comply with the terms of parole or probation can result in probation revocation or parole violation, which could lead to an offender being sent back to prison.
