How does my parole or probation officer know if I have been arrested for a new offense?
When an individual is placed on parole or probation in Massachusetts, one of the conditions of their release is a requirement to obey all laws. If an individual is arrested for a new offense, the police department that arrested them will contact the parole or probation officer of the individual. The police department will give the parole or probation officer details on the new charge and the individual’s arrest. The parole or probation officer will then evaluate the new charge and take the appropriate action provided for in the parole or probation agreement. The individual’s parole or probation officer may also receive information through other sources, such as court records, background checks, and other sources. If an individual is charged with a new offense but not arrested, the parole or probation officer may find out from the court or prosecutor’s office that a new charge has been filed against the individual. Parole or probation officers can also learn of a new offense directly from the individual. If the individual has been released on parole or probation, they are required to stay in contact with their parole or probation officer and advise them of any violations of the terms of their release. This includes any new criminal charges or arrests. If an individual has failed to follow the terms of their parole or probation, their parole or probation officer may take appropriate action, which can include revoking of their parole or probation.
