What is the difference between a parole revocation hearing and a probation revocation hearing?

In Washington, the differences between a parole revocation hearing and a probation revocation hearing are significant. A parole revocation hearing is for someone who was released from prison on parole and is being accused of violating parole. During this type of hearing, a parole board will review evidence that a parolee has violated the conditions of their parole. If the parole board finds the evidence is enough to conclude the parolee has violated their parole, the parolee may be returned to prison for the remainder of their sentence. A probation revocation hearing is for someone who was given probation instead of jail time and is now being accused of violating their probation. During a probation revocation hearing, a judge will review evidence that a probationer has violated the conditions of their probation and determine if they will remain on probation or have their probation revoked and be sent to jail. In both cases, the judge or parole board will review evidence and determine if the parolee or probationer has violated the conditions of their parole or probation. Ultimately, the result of either hearing can be a return to prison or jail, or a continuation of the probation or parole.
