What are the common causes of pedestrian accidents?
Pedestrian accidents occur when a person, usually a pedestrian, is injured as a result of interaction with an automobile. In Washington, the most common causes of pedestrian accidents involve unsafe driving actions or irresponsible behavior by either the pedestrian or the driver. Unsafe driving actions can include driving at an excessive speed, ignoring traffic signals, failing to pay attention to the road and its surrounding environment, or making unsafe lane changes. Unsafe pedestrian behaviors can include crossing the street without using designated crosswalks, walking in between parked cars, or not using available sidewalks. Other common causes of pedestrian accidents can include impaired driving and inexperienced drivers. A driver who is under the influence of drugs or alcohol can have difficulties with crossing traffic, have impaired perception, and can have delayed reaction time. Inexperienced drivers, such as teenagers, are more prone to make dangerous decisions on the road due to their inexperience. In addition to these common causes of pedestrian accidents, human error can also be a factor. This can include a pedestrian or a driver not being aware of their surroundings or a driver making a wrong turn due to a misread street sign. Human error can also be a factor when a driver fails to give a pedestrian the right of way or a pedestrian fails to use a crosswalk and attempts to jaywalk. In order to prevent pedestrian accidents, drivers and pedestrians both need to be aware of their environment, be aware of their speed, remain attentive to traffic, and follow the laws and regulations of the road. When these rules are followed properly, pedestrian accidents can be avoided and the chance of injury or death is minimized.
