What are the requirements for the safe storage of drugs?

The State of Mississippi has established specific requirements for the safe storage of drugs. First and foremost, all medications must be securely stored inside locked cabinets or other locked areas to prevent unauthorized access. Any drugs that are stored in an unlocked location must be under direct supervision of a pharmacist or their delegate at all times. All controlled substances must be stored separately and securely from all other medications, and must include prominently displayed signage indicating that access is restricted. Furthermore, all drugs must be stored in appropriately labeled containers, and the labels must include the name of the drug, dosage strength, quantity, date of expiration, and the name of the current owner or designated user. All drugs must be stored in appropriate temperature and humidity levels in order to ensure potency and stability. Refrigerated medications should not be stored in any area where the temperature can exceed 59 degrees Fahrenheit or dip below 41 degrees, and heat sensitive medications should never be exposed to direct sunlight or bright lighting. Finally, all medications must be stored in a manner that prevents accidental ingestion. This means all of the drugs should be stored in containers that are child proof and out of reach of children. All containers should be properly sealed and labeled to help prevent accidental ingestion.
