What are the requirements for the safe storage of drugs?

In Oregon, the safe storage of drugs is regulated by the Board of Pharmacy. The Oregon Board of Pharmacy Rule 855-017-0001 requires that all pharmaceuticals and controlled substances must be stored in a secure location with restricted access. All drugs must be stored in a locked cabinet or other secure area and maintained under appropriate environmental conditions. Depending on the drug, specific temperature ranges must be maintained. Any drugs that require refrigeration must be stored at or below 40°F, drugs that require freezing must be stored at or below -10°F, and drugs that require room temperature should be stored at or below 77°F. In addition, drugs must be stored in a manner that prevents tampering, contamination, and misuse. The Board of Pharmacy also requires that a logbook be kept to track the proper dispensing of drugs. A logbook must be available and easily accessible to all pharmacy staff. Any changes to the medications, sales, or other drug transactions must be documented in the logbook. All logbook entries must be signed and dated by the pharmacy technician. Finally, the Oregon Board of Pharmacy requires that pharmacies update and review their safe storage procedures on a regular basis. The Board of Pharmacy Rule 855-017-0001 states that pharmacies must review their policies at least once every six months to make sure that all drugs are stored safely and securely, and in accordance with Board of Pharmacy Rules.
