How does the government regulate the importation of drugs?
The government has a comprehensive system in place to regulate the importation of drugs in North Carolina. Generally, it is illegal to import drugs into the United States unless they have been approved for use by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA). The FDA must first approve any foreign drug that is intended to be imported into the United States. An importation license must then be obtained from the North Carolina Department of Health & Human Services. The FDA must also inspect and verify all imported drugs, to ensure that they meet its standards. In order to protect the health and safety of North Carolinians, the North Carolina Legislature has established a Drug Control Unit, which is responsible for overseeing the importation of drugs into the state. All foreign drug shipments must be approved by the Drug Control Unit before they can be imported. The Drug Control Unit also works to detect and prevent the illegal importation of drugs into North Carolina, ensuring that only the highest quality drugs are available for use in the state. To this end, the Unit works with the state’s law enforcement agencies to aggressively pursue any persons or entities found to be involved in the importation of unauthorized drugs. In addition, the Drug Control Unit is responsible for establishing policies and procedures to ensure that drugs imported into North Carolina are safe, effective, and of the highest quality. These policies and procedures are designed to ensure that only those drugs that have been approved for importation into the state are imported.
