What international privacy laws must businesses be aware of?

Businesses operating in California must be aware of international privacy laws that affect their operations. In particular, the European Union has enacted the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) which applies directly to businesses located in the United States, including those in California. The GDPR requires businesses to protect the privacy of personal data collected from individuals, including their name, address, and credit card information. Additionally, it sets forth guidelines for companies on how they should process, store, and erase personal data. Businesses must also understand any country-specific privacy laws they are subject to, such as the California Consumer Privacy Act, enacted in 2020. This law grants California residents more control over companies’ use of their personal information. Lastly, businesses must comply with data privacy laws set by the U.S. Federal Trade Commission. These rules require companies to inform consumers of their right to opt out of data collection, to only collect data that is necessary, and to properly secure data that they do store. Doing so will help businesses avoid any potential legal trouble due to a failure to abide by international privacy laws.
