What is a PCT application?
A PCT (Patent Cooperation Treaty) application is an international patent filing system that allows inventors to file a single patent application that can be used in multiple countries. This allows inventors to protect their inventions in multiple countries without having to go through the process of filing multiple applications in each country. In Washington, a PCT application is similar to filing a national application, but allows for the patent to be applied for in multiple countries. The process requires the inventor to prepare a single application that contains all of the information needed for the patent to be granted in all of the countries included in the application. Once the application is filed, the inventor can wait to hear from each individual country whether or not they have been successful in receiving the patent. This process saves time and money, as the inventor does not have to file multiple applications in multiple countries. The PCT application has created an efficient international patenting system which allows inventors to better protect their inventions abroad. In Washington state, a PCT application is likely the best option for inventors who wish to protect their inventions in multiple countries.
