What are the state laws related to reproductive health and rights?
In Washington, reproductive health and rights are protected by state law. Washington State has enacted several laws to ensure the safety, autonomy, and informed decision-making of individuals regarding reproductive health matters. These laws include mandating that all health insurance plans cover certain reproductive health services, such as contraceptive care and family planning services; prohibiting health insurance providers from discriminating against individuals based on gender identity, gender expression, or sexual orientation in the provision of healthcare; and mandating that health care facilities, providers, and insurers provide medically accurate information to individuals regarding their reproductive health care. Additionally, Washington State law protects individuals’ rights to access abortion services, by guaranteeing the right of a qualified individual to access, without discrimination, medically indicated abortions and related services, including counseling and hospital services. This law also protects individuals’ right to make decisions regarding their reproductive health without interference, by prohibiting parents and guardians from forcing a minor to have an abortion. Finally, Washington State also has laws aimed at protecting the health of pregnant individuals, including requiring employers to provide reasonable accommodations for an employee who is pregnant, such as modified work hours or light duties; and prohibiting employers from discriminating against an individual based on their pregnancy, childbirth, or related medical condition. This law also ensures that pregnant individuals have the right to continue to work and receive reasonable accommodation in order to do so.
