What is the difference between a realtor and a real estate agent?
Realtors and real estate agents do similar jobs in the residential real estate market. In California, however, there are some differences between these two professions. Real estate agents typically have a basic license to buy and sell real estate. They help clients search for homes, and negotiate on their behalf to buy or sell a property. Most agents are employed by a real estate company, and their salaries are based on commissions they earn from completed transactions. Realtors, on the other hand, have completed additional training and hold a real estate license. In order to become a Realtor, agents must join the National Association of Realtors (NAR) and they must adhere to a strict code of conduct. Realtors receive commissions, but they must also pay dues to the NAR and they must obtain additional training and certifications. Realtors also have access to a Multiple Listing Service (MLS) which is a database that contains information on all residential properties for sale in the area. This service allows Realtors to market their clients’ homes more effectively and to have access to a greater range of properties. In summary, both real estate agents and Realtors can help people buy and sell homes in California. However, Realtors have taken additional steps to meet the requirements of the NAR and to have access to the MLS. In doing so, Realtors may be able to provide more comprehensive services to their clients.
