Can I work while receiving Social Security Disability?

Yes, you can work while receiving Social Security Disability (SSD) in California. However, there are certain conditions that must be met in order to be eligible. The Social Security Administration (SSA) uses a program called the Trial Work Period (TWP) to determine whether or not an individual is able to work while receiving SSD. The TWP allows individuals to test their ability to work for nine months without losing their SSD benefits. During this time, any earnings you make will not affect your SSD payments. Once the TWP is complete, the SSA will determine if you are able to do “substantial gainful activity” – or “SGA.” SGA is defined as working at a job and earning more than a certain amount of money. If you are able to do SGA, you will no longer be eligible for SSD benefits. If you are not able to do SGA, you will be eligible to continue receiving SSD payments. In addition, the SSA has set up what is known as the “work incentive program.” This program rewards individuals for staying in the workforce and allows them to keep more of their SSD payments even if they are earning more money. This encourages individuals to work and allows them to stay on SSD while still maintaining a degree of financial independence.
