Can I work while receiving Social Security Disability?

In South Dakota, people receiving Social Security Disability (SSD) can work while receiving benefits. There is a limit on how much money people can make when receiving SSD, called the “substantial gainful activity” (SGA) limit. In 2021, the SGA limit is $1,310 for non-blind people and $2,190 for blind people. If a person receiving SSD makes more than these amounts, their SSD benefits will be suspended. It is important to note that it is not necessary to stop working if a person’s earnings exceed the SGA limit. Instead, they should report their increased earnings to the Social Security Administration (SSA). The SSA will then calculate if the person’s SSD benefit should be suspended or not. If a person’s SSD benefit is suspended, they may still be able to receive benefits if their earnings are below the SGA limit in the future. This is known as a “trial work period” (TWP). During the TWP, a person who is receiving SSD can make more than the SGA limit for up to 9 months without their benefit being suspended. To sum up, people receiving SSD in South Dakota may be able to work while receiving benefits as long as they do not exceed the SGA limit. If they do exceed the limit, they should report their increased earnings and may still be able to receive benefits if their earnings are below the SGA limit in the future.
