How long can I receive Social Security Disability benefits?
In Washington, the amount of time you can receive Social Security Disability (SSD) benefits depends on the severity of your disability. Generally, SSD benefits are available for those who become disabled before reaching their full retirement age. If you become disabled before reaching the retirement age of 65, you may be eligible for SSD benefits for an indefinite period of time. However, your benefits must be reviewed every three years to make sure that you are still disabled and eligible to receive benefits. If you become disabled after reaching full retirement age, you can receive benefits for the rest of your life. Note, however, that if you become disabled after age 65, the Social Security Administration may review your case to make sure you are still eligible for benefits. There are some exceptions to the above rules. For instance, if the disability is found to be a result of military service, the disability benefits may be available for longer than the normal timeframe. In any case, the Social Security Administration will inform you of the duration of your disability benefits, so it is important to speak to a representative if you have any questions.
