What are “impairment-related work expenses”?
Impairment-related work expenses (IRWEs) are expenses related to a disability that enable an individual to work. These expenses may include things like special equipment, transportation costs, or other accommodations that are needed in order for the individual to be able to do their job. In Washington, such expenses are covered as part of Social Security Disability (SSD) eligibility. To qualify for IRWE coverage, an individual must be approved for SSD benefits, and the costs must be approved by the Social Security Administration (SSA). The expenses must be medically necessary, and related to an impairment that affects the individual’s ability to work. In addition, the expenses must be reasonable in cost and directly related to the individual’s earning capacity. For example, a person with a hearing impairment who needs a hearing aid to be able to do their job may qualify for IRWE coverage. Similarly, transportation costs associated with getting to and from work may be covered. In Washington, IRWEs can be a helpful tool for individuals who are trying to work despite a disability. It can make the difference between being able to work or not. It is important to note, however, that not all disability-related expenses are covered. It is important to talk with an experienced attorney to better understand the specifics of IRWE coverage in Washington.
