What are the Social Security disability provisions for children?

In Washington, social security disability provisions are just as applicable to children as to any other applicants. To qualify for Supplemental Security Insurance (SSI), a child must have a physical or mental disability that results in a marked and severe functional limitation. Additionally, the disability must have lasted or be expected to last for at least 12 months or result in death. The disability should cause extreme difficulty with two or more of the following activities: mobility, self-care, communication, learning, self-direction, independent living, or economic self-sufficiency. In Washington, the applicant must also have very limited resources as well as a very low income. Typically, a child must receive less than $783 in income per calendar month in order to qualify for SSI. More and more children are qualifying for disability benefits each year, as the definition of disability has been broadened to cover more conditions. Not only physical disabilities can qualify, such as cerebral palsy, muscular dystrophy, and juvenile rheumatoid arthritis, but mental disorders can qualify as well, such as autism, learning disabilities, attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder, and schizophrenia. Children in Washington who qualify for SSI can continue to receive benefits for as long as their condition is expected to last. This includes children who have been receiving SSI before the age of 18, as long as their medical condition still meets the criteria for a disabled individual. Additionally, when a child reaches the age of 18, they must go through another round of evaluation to determine if they still qualify for SSI.
