What is a qualifying disability for Supplemental Security Income (SSI)?
In order to qualify for Supplemental Security Income (SSI) in Utah, you must have a disability which meets Social Security Administration (SSA) requirements. In order to meet SSA standards, your disability must be severe, last at least 12 months, and leave you unable to work. The most common qualifying disabilities for SSI in Utah include physical impairments, mental health issues, and developmental disabilities. Specific qualifying physical impairments may include chronic conditions such as arthritis, asthma, diabetes, and heart disease, as well as physical injuries or impairments due to accidents or illnesses. Mental health issues that may qualify you for SSI in Utah include depression, anxiety, bipolar disorder, schizophrenia, and post-traumatic stress disorder. Developmental disabilities that may qualify include autism, cerebral palsy, Down syndrome, and intellectual disability. It is important to note that even if you are experiencing one of these disabling conditions, it does not guarantee that you will automatically qualify for SSI benefits. In order to determine if you are eligible for SSI, you will need to provide medical evidence to the SSA that you are unable to work due to your disability.
