What is the Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI) program?
The Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI) program is a federal program of the United States that provides income support to individuals who have become disabled and are unable to work. The program is administered by the Social Security Administration (SSA) and was established in 1956 as part of the Social Security Act. To be eligible for Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI) in California, an individual must meet certain criteria, such as: having worked for a certain length of time, having the proper job history, and having an illness or disability that makes it impossible to work. SSDI is a federal program that pays benefits to individuals who have been awarded disability benefits from the SSA. SSDI benefits may be collected until the disability ends or until the individual reaches retirement age. In California, SSDI benefits will be based on the amount of past earnings. The amount of benefits an individual receives is determined by a formula that considers the number of years the individual worked and their average earnings. In addition, any past earnings earned in California will be counted for the purpose of calculating SSDI benefits. To apply for SSDI in California, individuals should contact the nearest Social Security office. Once the application is approved, individuals may receive either a lump sum payment or a monthly payment. The definition of disability is set by the SSA, and the approval process can take several months. If approved, payments will be made as long as the disability continues or until the recipient reaches retirement age.
