What are “impairment-related work expenses”?
Impairment-related work expenses (IRWE) are costs that an individual with a disability incurs in order to work. These expenses are not included in the basic cost of living or in the national standard for income deductions for a person with a disability. For example, a disabled individual may need to purchase a wheelchair in order to get to and from work, or may need to hire someone to provide assistance with transportation. Other IRWEs can include the cost of special equipment or services needed to participate in the labor force such as special furniture, medical care, personal assistance, or services related to taking care of a child or dependent with a disability. In South Dakota, Social Security rules provide an allowance for needed IRWEs to be deducted from a recipient’s earnings when determining if they are disabled according to Social Security standards. This means that individuals with disabilities can deduct allowable expenses from their earnings when the costs are more than seven and one-half percent of their total income. This helps disabled individuals more accurately reflect their true earnings, so they can apply for and receive allowances that better meet their needs.
