What are the penalties for filing taxes late?
Filing taxes late can have serious consequences, as the state of Florida takes tax compliance very seriously. Generally, when a person files their taxes late they are assessed a penalty for each month or portion of a month that their return is late. The penalty is 5% of the unpaid taxes for each month or portion of a month that the return is late, up to a maximum of 25%. This means that if a taxpayer is more than five months late in filing their return, they will face a 25% penalty. In addition to this penalty, the taxpayer is also responsible for interest charges for any unpaid taxes. The interest will continue to accrue until the taxes are paid in full. Interest rates change each quarter and generally range from 3% to 8.5%. Finally, individuals who willfully fail to file an income tax return can also face criminal prosecution and be pursued for civil penalties. Depending on the severity of the offense, a person can be fined and/or serve jail time for not filing their taxes. Overall, filing taxes late has serious consequences in the state of Florida. It is important to file taxes as soon as possible to avoid any additional penalties and interest charges.
