How do I claim my dependents on my taxes?
Claiming dependents on your taxes is an important part of filing your taxes in California. The first step is to make sure that you can actually claim the dependent. Generally, you are able to claim a dependent if they are a qualifying child or a qualifying relative. A qualifying child is a child under the age of 19 (or 24 if they are a full-time student). Additionally, they must be related to you by birth, marriage, or adoption. A qualifying relative is someone who is related to you by birth, marriage, or adoption or someone that you provide at least 50% of their total support. Once you have determined if the individual is a qualifying dependent, then you can begin to claim them on your taxes. To do so, you must fill out IRS Form 1040 and check the box next to the line listing your dependents. On this form, you must include information about each dependent, such as their name, Social Security number, and relationship to you. Additionally, you must include their total income and a tax statement, such as a W-2 or 1099 form, if they are filing one. Finally, make sure to include any deductions or credits related to your dependents. These may be available on your form or may need to be filled out separately. The deductions and credits may include the Child Tax Credit, Earned Income Credit, Child and Dependent Care Credit, and Education Credit. Once you have completed all of the steps and verified that you are eligible to claim the dependents, you can submit your taxes and receive the applicable benefits.
