Are medical expenses tax deductible?

In Washington, medical expenses are tax deductible in some cases. Generally speaking, individuals who itemize deductions on their federal income tax return may be able to deduct qualifying medical expenses that are more than 7.5 percent of their adjusted gross income. In other words, if your medical costs exceed 7.5 percent of your adjusted gross income, you may be able to deduct the amount that exceeds that sum. Qualifying medical expenses in Washington include those associated with the diagnosis, cure, mitigation, treatment, or prevention of disease; and payments for the purpose of affecting any structure or function of the body. This includes doctor, hospital, and nursing home bills; lab fees; medical supplies; ambulance fees; prostheses; prescription drugs; and eyeglasses and contact lenses, among other medical costs. It is important to note that medical expenses must be paid out of pocket in order to be deductible. Costs that are reimbursed by your insurance provider are not eligible for deduction. Additionally, some medical expenses may be subject to limits. For example, you can only deduct the cost of over-the-counter drugs with a prescription. If you think you may be eligible to deduct your medical expenses, you must fill out Form 1040 or 1040-SR and include Schedules A and C when filing your taxes. It’s also important to keep thorough records of all your medical expenses, including receipts and invoices.
