What is taxation without representation?

Taxation without representation is a phrase coined during the American Revolution referring to the lack of representation for American colonies in the British Parliament. This phrase referred to the taxation burdens placed on the colonies by the British government without them having any representation in the government. This lack of representation caused much unrest amongst the colonies, eventually leading to the American Revolutionary War. In Virginia, taxation without representation is seen as an unjust burden on citizens who do not have the means to vote in their local or state governments. This lack of representation led to the Virginia Statute for Religious Freedom which established the right of citizens to practice their beliefs without facing discrimination. Although taxation without representation is no longer an issue in Virginia or the US, the phrase is still used to describe unfair burden placed on citizens of any country. Unjust taxes, such as the ones which lead to the American Revolution, can have drastic effects on the citizens and government of a country. It is important to remember that taxation without representation is still a real problem in many countries, and it should be taken seriously whenever it is seen.
