What is the difference between a trade secret and copyright law?

The difference between trade secret law and copyright law is that trade secret law is designed to protect confidential information while copyright law is intended to protect creative works. Trade secret law protects information such as customer lists, formulas, recipes, processes, and other valuable information that is not necessarily creative. It is not automatically protected by law but requires that reasonable efforts be taken to keep it secret and confidential. Copyright law, on the other hand, is intended to protect the ownership of original and creative works. This includes works of art, literature, music, films, and photographs. Copyrights allow the creators of these works to prevent others from using or reproducing their works without their permission. Both trade secrets and copyrights are important to protect ownership of an individual’s intellectual property from unauthorized disclosure or use. However, trade secret law exists to protect the confidential information of a business while copyright law serves to protect creative works.
