What types of traffic offenses require a court appearance?

Most traffic offenses in Washington state do not require a court appearance. However, there are certain violations where a court appearance is mandatory. These violations include Driving Under the Influence (DUI), driving with a suspended/revoked license, and vehicular homicide. Additionally, any felony or misdemeanor offenses that involve a motor vehicle may also require a court appearance. Traffic infractions that require a court appearance include hit-and-run, failure to yield to an emergency vehicle, passing a school bus with the stop sign extended, and any offense that is punishable by jail time. A driver may also be required to appear in court for an excessive speeding violation, or for reckless driving. In addition to the above, drivers may be ordered to appear in court for certain traffic violations such as child restraint violations, exceeding the speed limit by more than 25 mph, and running a red light. Drivers may also be required to appear in court if they are caught driving after their license has been suspended or revoked. It is important to note that if a driver is issued a ticket for a traffic violation that requires a court appearance, they must appear in court on the date specified in their ticket. If they fail to appear in court, they may face additional penalties such as license suspension or revocation, hefty fines, and/or jail time.
