What is a “fix-it ticket”?

A “fix-it ticket” is a type of traffic ticket issued in Nebraska. It is issued when a driver commits a minor offense, such as a broken headlight, and the police officer believes the driver can easily rectify the infraction. Examples of these minor offenses include a broken tail light, expired license plates, loud mufflers, and windows that are too darkly tinted. Instead of giving the driver a ticket, as is done for more serious offenses, the police officer will instead issue a fix-it ticket. The fix-it ticket will specify the offense that was committed, usually with a description or the statute number, and will require the driver to fix the problem within a certain period of time. The driver must then prove that the infraction was corrected, usually by submitting a receipt or photograph of the repair to the court. If the proof is not submitted in time, the driver will have to pay a penalty. In Nebraska, fix-it tickets are usually issued as civil offenses, meaning that the driver does not receive points on their license. However, if the driver does not submit proof that the issue was fixed, the ticket may be reclassified as a criminal offense and the driver may face other penalties as well.
