What is a “fix-it ticket”?

A “fix-it ticket” is a type of traffic ticket issued in Virginia. It is also known as a “correctable violation” because once the violation has been corrected, the ticket can be dismissed. Fix-it tickets are issued when the driver has committed a minor violation, such as a broken tail light or not wearing a seat belt. To “fix” the ticket, the driver must either provide proof that the violation has been corrected or appear in court and do so in the presence of an officer. If the driver does not provide proof of correction or appear in court, the ticket will remain unpaid, and the driver may be issued additional penalties. In Virginia, if a driver has a fix-it ticket, they can get it dismissed by going to court and showing a notarized affidavit from a law enforcement officer, a motor vehicle inspector, or a mechanic, indicating the violation has been fixed. If the ticket is dismissed, no fines or court costs will be charged. However, if the driver fails to prove the violation has been fixed, the driver may have to pay the fine and any additional court costs. It is important to understand that even if a fix-it ticket is dismissed, it will still appear on the driver’s record. Employers, insurance companies, and other organizations may still be able to see a dismissed fix-it ticket on the driver’s record.
