In South Carolina, drivers can get points removed from their license for a traffic ticket by taking an approved driver safety course. To qualify, the driver must have a valid South Carolina license, have no more than six active points on their driving record, and have not completed an approved driver safety course within the last three years. The driver will need to complete a Driver Improvement Program (DIP) offered by a provider approved by the South Carolina Department of Motor Vehicles. These courses are available both online and in-person and last anywhere from four to eight hours. During the course, the driver will learn defensive driving techniques, vehicle maintenance tips, and state laws and regulations. The course must be completed within 90 days of registering for it.
