What is the difference between a warning and a ticket?
In Illinois, a warning and a ticket are two different types of responses to a traffic offense. A warning is generally given for minor offenses, such as speeding or rolling through a stop sign. It is issued by a police officer to the driver and serves as a warning that if the driver commits a similar offense in the future, he or she may receive a ticket. A ticket, on the other hand, is a citation that officially charges the driver with a traffic violation. The ticket includes a description of the offense, the driver’s identifying information, and the fines or penalties associated with the violation. The recipient of the ticket may have to pay a fee or attend a court hearing, depending on the severity of the offense. In some cases, the officer may choose to give the driver a warning instead of a ticket. In these instances, it is a courtesy and does not preclude the driver from receiving a ticket if they repeat the offense. However, the officer can choose to issue a ticket instead of a warning if the driver has committed more serious violations or has an extensive record of traffic violations.
