How has the Supreme Court interpreted the rights recognized by the Bill of Rights?

The United States Supreme Court has interpreted the rights recognized by the Bill of Rights (first ten amendments to the United States Constitution) in many different ways. The Supreme Court of New Mexico has also weighed in on this subject, based on the interpretation of their own state constitution. In New Mexico, the Supreme Court has found that the State Constitution recognizes a broad scope of individual rights, and that state government may not infringe upon or limit these rights. For example, in the case of Loter v. City of Santa Fe, 593 P.2d 936, the Supreme Court of New Mexico held that the right to privacy established by the State Constitution includes the right to engage in sexual activities outside of marriage. The Supreme Court of the United States has also broadly interpreted the Bill of Rights. For instance, in Brown v. Board of Education, 347 U.S. 483 (1954), the Court held that the equal protection clause of the Fourteenth Amendment prohibited segregation in public schools. Other notable examples are the cases of Miranda v. Arizona, 384 U.S. 436 (1966) which established the doctrine of “Miranda rights” for criminal suspects and Roe v. Wade, 410 U.S. 113 (1973) which established a constitutional right to an abortion. In general, the Supreme Court of the United States has interpreted the Bill of Rights to place a broad range of individual rights off-limits to government interference. These rights range from the right to privacy, to the right to bear arms, to the right to a fair trial, and many more. In this way, the Supreme Court has helped to ensure that the Bill of Rights remains an effective safeguard of individual rights in the United States.
