The National Electric Reliability Council (NERC) is an independent, nonprofit organization responsible for promoting and enforcing electric reliability standards across North Carolina and the United States. NERC was created in 1968 with the passage of the Federal Power Act and is now a part of the North American Electric Reliability Corporation (NERC). The primary purpose of the NERC is to develop and enforce electricity reliability standards. These standards are designed to ensure that the electric power industry operates in a reliable and secure manner. NERC standards cover everything from power plant operations to transmission line construction to renewable resource integration. Additionally, NERC oversees the operation of the bulk power system, which includes transmission lines, substations, and related control equipment. The NERC also works to ensure compliance with the North American Electric Reliability Corporation Code of Conduct. This code sets out the responsibilities and expectations of members of the electric power system, including operators of generating plants, transmission lines, and distribution systems. NERC works to ensure compliance with this code so that the industry operates in a safe and reliable manner. Overall, the National Electric Reliability Council serves as an important resource for the electric power industry in North Carolina and the United States. The NERC works to ensure the safety, reliability, and security of the electric power system so that all members of the electric power system can enjoy uninterrupted service.
