Who is eligible for veterans benefits?

In California, veterans who served in the armed forces of the United States may be eligible for veterans benefits. In order to be eligible, an individual must have served on active duty for more than 180 days, unless discharged or released from service for a service-connected disability. Certain veterans who received an "other than dishonorable" discharge may be eligible for veterans benefits. An honorable discharge is the highest level of discharge and may qualify for a greater range of benefits. In general, veterans who received other than dishonorable discharges may still qualify for some benefits but may not qualify for all benefits. Although not all veterans are eligible, veterans who served during wartime may qualify for additional benefits. War-time veterans must have served on active duty in the military or in a campaign or expedition for which a campaign badge is authorized. Veterans may also be eligible if they served in the U.S military and completed at least 20 years of service, or if they have suffered a service-connected disability or illness. Additionally, certain family members may also qualify for benefits if the veteran died while in service or if the veteran has suffered a service-connected disability or illness. In California, most veterans are eligible to receive a property tax exclusion and a veterans home loan guarantee. To apply for these benefits, veterans must submit an application to their local county veterans service office.
