Who is eligible for veterans benefits?

In North Carolina, a veteran is someone who has served in the active military, naval, or air service of the United States or with a reserve component of the United States and who has been discharged from such service under conditions other than dishonorable. Any veteran who has been a resident of North Carolina for at least six months is eligible for veterans benefits in the state. Additionally, members of the National Guard who are not veterans may qualify for some veterans benefits. Surviving spouses, spouses of 100% disabled veterans, unremarried widows of deceased veterans, and children and parents of veterans who died while in service may also be eligible to receive veterans benefits in North Carolina. Some of the veterans benefits available in North Carolina include access to veterans health care, educational assistance, home loans, employment services, and burial services. To access these and many other benefits, veterans must fill out and submit an application for benefits from the North Carolina Department of Military and Veterans Affairs. Eligibility requirements for benefits vary, so it is important to review the application and eligibility requirements prior to submitting the application.
