What is a VA life insurance policy and how do I get one?

A VA life insurance policy is a type of policy offered by the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (VA), which provides financial support to veterans and their families in cases of death or disability. It is a coverage that is available to eligible Service members, Veterans and their families. A VA life insurance policy helps to provide financial protection against the financial burden associated with the death of a loved one. Service members, Veterans and their families may choose from several types of VA life insurance policies in order to receive the protection they need and deserve. The most popular type of VA life insurance is the Servicemembers’ Group Life Insurance (SGLI). This policy provides a death benefit of up to $400,000 to an eligible Service member, Veteran or their family in the event of a death. Additionally, eligible Veterans who develop a disability during their military service may be eligible for coverage under the Veterans’ Group Life Insurance (VGLI). In order to be eligible for a VA life insurance policy, individuals must meet certain eligibility requirements. Service members must be active duty, Selected Reserve, or National Guard members, while Veterans must have been discharged from military service under other than dishonorable conditions to be eligible. If you have served in the U.S. military and meet the eligibility requirements, you may be able to apply for a VA life insurance policy. You can apply for life insurance coverage by completing the appropriate form and submitting it along with the required supporting documents. You can obtain forms and information on the VA’s life insurance webpage or by calling the VA’s toll-free number.
