What is the VA pension and how do veterans qualify?

The VA pension is a benefit program created by the US Department of Veterans Affairs. This program provides financial aid to eligible veterans and their survivors who have limited or no income. In order to qualify, veterans must have served on active duty with the US Armed Forces and have been discharged or released under conditions other than dishonorable. In order to receive the VA pension, veterans must meet certain income and net worth limits. Specifically, the annual gross income of the veteran must be below the Annuitant’s Maximum Annual Pension Rate (MAPR). Additionally, the veteran’s net worth cannot exceed the Maximum VA Pension rate. In Virginia, these amounts are subject to change and can be viewed on the Department of Veterans Services website. Veterans who meet the eligibility requirements for the VA pension may be eligible for an increased pension rate called Aid and Attendance. These benefits are higher and are payable to veterans who require regular attendance by another person for their daily needs. In order to qualify for Aid and Attendance, veterans must be hospitalized, bedridden, housebound, or blind. VA pensions can provide essential economic assistance to veterans and their survivors who are in need. For more information, Virginia veterans should visit their local Department of Veterans Services office or contact the regional Department of Veterans Affairs in order to learn more about eligibility requirements and the application process.
