What is the VA Pension program and how do veterans qualify?

The VA Pension program, also known as the Veterans Pension benefit, is a federal program designed to provide financial assistance to wartime veterans and their surviving spouses or dependents in Alaska. To qualify for the VA Pension program, a veteran must have served at least 90 days of active military service, at least one of which must have been during a period of war as defined by Congress. In addition, veteran applicants must meet certain age and income requirements. Those who are 65 or older, or are permanently and totally disabled, and whose annual family income does not exceed the current pension rate established by the VA, may qualify for this benefit. In certain cases, a veteran’s spouse or dependent may qualify for benefits even if the veteran is not eligible. Veterans must also provide eligible military service documents and other supporting evidence when applying for the VA Pension program. The VA recommends that applicants also have their medical records available to present to the VA when applying. The VA Pension may be used to help veterans pay for basic needs such as food and shelter, and may allow them to receive additional services and benefits.
