How do I get a copy of my discharge papers?

If you are a veteran living in Alaska, you may be eligible for certain benefits under Veterans Benefits Law. One important document you may need to access these benefits is a copy of your discharge papers, also known as a DD-214 or Certificate of Release or Discharge from Active Duty. In order to get a copy of your discharge papers, you will need to contact the National Personnel Records Center located in St. Louis, Missouri. You can do this by visiting their website or calling them at 314-801-0800. You’ll need to provide your name, date of birth, Social Security Number, branch of service, and dates of service. The National Personnel Records Center will then be able to provide you with a copy of your discharge papers. Once you have them, you can take them to your nearest Veterans Benefits office to help you file for veterans benefits in Alaska. It’s important to note that any discharged personnel who served after 1994 may need to request a copy of their discharge papers from their last command or unit where they were assigned at the time of discharge. Finally, if the National Personnel Records Center is unable to provide you with a copy of your discharge papers, you can request a Certificate of Non-Availability of Discharge Records from them. This type of document can also be used as proof of your military service.
