What is the VA Pension program and how do veterans qualify?

The VA Pension Program is a program that provides financial assistance to Veterans who are age 65 and older, or who are permanently and totally disabled with limited income. The VA Pension Program can provide monthly payments to Veterans, their spouses, and their dependent children. To qualify for the VA Pension Program, a Veteran must have served at least 90 days of active military service with at least one day during a period of war (World War II, Korean War, Vietnam, Persian Gulf War, or other designated military actions), have remained honorably discharged, and have a limited amount of assets and income. Generally, a Veteran who qualifies must have a net worth, not including the home they live in and certain other items, of less than $127,061 as of 2021. In addition to the net worth limit, an applicant’s countable income must be below a certain level. To calculate countable income, the VA subtracts medical and other expenses from the applicant’s total income. If the result is below the maximum income limit, the applicant may qualify. Veterans who may qualify for the VA Pension Program may be eligible for several different types of benefits, including an “Aid and Attendance” allowance to help pay for care in their home or a nursing home, and a Homebound allowance for those who are housebound.
