What is the Veterans Medical Care program and how do veterans qualify?

Veterans Medical Care is a program specifically for veterans in California that provides coverage for medically necessary care and services for veterans. This program covers medical, surgical, and mental health services as well as prescriptions, prosthetic devices, and supplies. In order to qualify for veterans medical care, a veteran must meet at least one of the following criteria: • Be a veteran and have a service-connected disability rated at least 50% • Be a veteran and receiving VA pension or compensation • Be a veteran who was a prisoner of war • Be a veteran enrolled in a VA healthcare program • Be a veteran and have a service-connected disability rated 0-40% In addition, veterans must also meet certain residency and financial requirements in order to qualify for medical care. This includes living in California for at least nine months out of the year and having an income that does not exceed the state-defined “Medi-Cal Standard of Need”. Veterans who qualify for the program can access care through a network of doctors, hospitals, and other medical facilities that are contracted by the Veterans Affairs (VA). The VA will cover the cost of most medical services for eligible veterans. However, there may be other costs such as deductibles and copayments that will need to be paid by the veteran.
