How do I apply for survivor benefits?
In Delaware, veteran survivors can apply for survivor benefits through the U.S. Department of Veteran Affairs. The first step in applying for survivor benefits is to determine if you are eligible for them. Eligibility depends on the circumstances of the veteran’s death, such as whether or not they were in active duty status. To apply, you must complete the relevant forms that can be found online, or you can request a paper copy by calling the Delaware Division of Veterans Affairs. Submitting the forms requires several documents and proof of your relationship to the veteran, such as a certified copy of their death certificate, marriage certificate, military records, and other proof of your identity and relationship to the veteran. Once you have submitted the forms and documents, you will be contacted by the Delaware Division of Veterans Affairs. They will review all of your documents to determine whether or not you are eligible for the benefits and, if you are, they will process your application. It can take several weeks for the processing time to complete and it is important to be patient. If you have any questions or need assistance, you can contact the Delaware Division of Veterans Affairs for help.
