How do I apply for burial or funeral benefits?

In order to apply for burial/funeral benefits in the state of Virginia, you must be a veteran, spouse, or dependent of a veteran. You must provide proof of your veteran or family member’s service in the form of a valid DD214 or discharge document. You can apply for burial/funeral benefits for yourself or a family member by going to the Virginia Department of Veterans Services website and completing their online application: www.dvs.virginia.gov/service-members-families/burial-funeral-benefits.html Alternatively, you can print out a PDF application and submit it via mail to the address listed on the form. The application must include a copy of the veteran’s DD214 or discharge document and proof of death, such as a death certificate. It is important to note that the state of Virginia does not cover the cost of a funeral or burial—only the costs associated with the plot or service. Once the application is received, the benefits will be awarded in the form of a check written to the cemetery or funeral service and mailed to the veteran’s or family member’s address listed on the application. It is important to note that if the deceased veteran was eligible for free national burial, this benefit supersedes all other burial benefits. For more information, contact the nearest national cemetery.
