What is the VA Education program and how do veterans qualify?

The VA Education program is a program available to veterans in Washington that provides them with education benefits. Qualifying veterans must have received an honorable discharge or been medically retired due to a disability. In addition, veterans must have at least 180 days of active duty service to qualify, unless they are on active duty and covered by the “Gulf War” or “Post-9/11” eras, in which case they only need to have 90 days of active duty service. The program provides veterans with tuition and fees for approved education programs, a monthly allowance for books, supplies, and other related costs, and the option to participate in one of the many VA Vocational Rehabilitation and Employment Programs. Some of the approved education programs include apprenticeships and on-the-job training, distance learning, and vocational/technical schools. Veterans are also eligible for the Yellow Ribbon Program, which allows some veterans to attend private universities with tuition expenses that exceed the maximum tuition cap set by the VA. Those who qualify for this program can receive up to 50% more in tuition assistance and the university will pay the remaining difference. Overall, the VA Education program is an invaluable benefit that provides veterans with the opportunity to pursue an education that they may not have been able to otherwise obtain. It is important for veterans to understand the qualifications and benefits of the program and to take full advantage of all that it has to offer.
