Are there any special benefits available for veterans who are veterans of the Iraq War?
Yes, there are several special benefits available for veterans who are veterans of the Iraq War in Alaska. The first one is called the Alaska Veteran’s Bonus Program, which is a cash bonus for Alaska veterans who served in Iraq or Afghanistan after September 11, 2001. To be eligible, the veteran must have been a resident of Alaska when the service began, have served for at least 90 days of active duty, been discharged under honorable conditions, and received an Alaska Permanent Fund Dividend of at least $1,000 during the year they served. Veterans can receive up to $2,000 for a full year of service in Iraq or Afghanistan. In addition, Iraq War veterans are eligible to apply for a permanent fund dividend of up to $1,600 each year when they return to Alaska. They can also qualify for an Alaska Senior Veterans Property Tax Exemption, which exempts half of the value of their primary residence from property taxes. This exemption is available to any Alaska veteran who served in a war zone during a time of war, and is extended to their spouses and dependents after the veteran’s death. Veterans of the Iraq War in Alaska can also apply for educational benefits through the GI Bill. This includes tuition waivers and grants for veterans and their families to pursue higher education at an accredited institution. A portion of the Alaska GI Bill also covers educational counselor fees to provide guidance and support to veterans.
