What are the service requirements for veterans disability benefits?

Veterans disability benefits are financial assistance provided to military veterans who suffer from an injury or illness incurred or aggravated during active military service. In order to receive these benefits, service requirements must be met. In New Jersey, veterans must have served on active duty and been discharged or released under conditions other than dishonorable. Additionally, the veteran must be a resident of New Jersey or an active member of the National Guard in order to qualify. To be eligible for a basic disability payment, veterans must have served at least 90 days of active duty with at least one day during active “wartime” service. If the veteran served less than 90 days, the time in service must have been during wartime. Veterans who were medically discharged due to an illness or injury are eligible for veteran disability benefits providing their injury or illness was the result of active duty service. To qualify, the veteran must have been service connected, meaning that the disability or illness must have been a direct result of active military service. Finally, additional benefits are available to veterans who have a service connected disability rating. A service connected disability rating is assigned by the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs and is based on the severity of the disability. The more severe the disability, the higher the rating. Veterans disability benefits can provide critical support to veterans who have been injured or are facing illnesses as a result of active military service. Meeting the service requirements is the first step to receiving these benefits in New Jersey.
