What are the service requirements for veterans disability benefits?

In Virginia, veterans are eligible for disability benefits if they meet certain service requirements. In order to qualify, veterans must have served in the U.S. armed forces for at least 90 days or more (including active duty, reserve or National Guard duty). If a veteran served during a time of war (including WWI, WWII, Korean War, Vietnam War, Persian Gulf War, and the Global War on Terrorism), they may be eligible for benefits even if they served fewer than 90 days. Veterans may also be eligible for benefits if they have a service-connected disability or if they were discharged with a disability that occurred while they were in the service or that was aggravated by military service. Additionally, a veteran must not have been discharged under dishonorable conditions in order to qualify for disability benefits. Finally, a veteran must have a disability that has lasted for at least one year, was caused by a service-related incident or illness, and has had a lasting significant impact on their ability to work and live their daily lives with a disability rating of at least 10%. This disability rating is determined by the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) based on medical evidence and other factors, after a veteran has applied for and received VA disability benefits.
