How long will my claim take to process?
Every veteran’s claim is unique and there is no set timeline for its processing. However, the Virginia Department of Veterans Services aims to process most cases within 12 to 18 months. Generally a decision on a claim is made within 90 days, however can sometimes take longer. In order to expedite the process, the Virginia Department of Veterans Services strongly encourages veterans to provide any additional evidence needed to support their claim. The more evidence you provide the faster the claims process will be. If you are unhappy with the results of your claim, you can request a review or appeal with the Board of Veterans’ Appeals. This process adds time to your case, as it needs to be reviewed and a new decision needs to be made. If you are already experiencing financial hardship, you can apply for Advance Payments from the Department of Veterans Affairs to receive compensation ahead of your claim being processed. It is important to stay in contact with the Claims Office and keep them updated with any changes in your personal information, such as your address. All communication should be in writing. Ultimately the processing time for your claim will depend on the evidence you provide and the speed with which the issuing body deals with it.
