What evidence do I need to prove my disability?

In order to prove your disability and qualify for veterans disability benefits in California, you will need to provide evidence to the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) that your disability is related to service in the military. Your evidence should include supporting medical evidence, such as medical records, doctors’ notes, or other documentation from healthcare providers showing that you have a disability. It should also include a complete description of how the disability affects you within your work and routine activities. Additionally, you should include service medical records, separation papers, and pension documents to support your military service. If you are trying to receive a higher level of disability benefits, you should also provide evidence from family, friends, coworkers, or supervisors that can speak to the severity of your disability and how it affects your daily life. Furthermore, you may also provide evidence to the VA that you have difficulty finding and/or maintaining employment because of your disability. This could include proof of past attempts to find employment and any unsuccessful job applications or interviews that you completed. Once you have submitted all of your evidence, the VA will review it and decide if you are eligible for veterans disability benefits. If you are approved, you will receive an award letter and your disability benefits will begin.
