How do I prove my service-connected disability?

Proving your service-connected disability in California can be done in two ways. The first way is through the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) service records, or through a private doctor’s diagnosis. If you have a VA service record, you should provide your VA claim number and a copy of your service records to the California Division of Veterans Affairs (CalVet). If you don’t have a VA service record, you should obtain a diagnosis from a private doctor who specializes in the disability you have or service-connected condition for which you are seeking benefits. Your doctor will need to document and certify your disability or condition. You must provide a full medical history, including any treatments, medications, and hospitalizations, as well as any other medical records that may be relevant to your claim. The doctor should also provide an opinion detailing how your disability or condition is connected to your military service. Once you have obtained your records and/or diagnosis, you must submit them to CalVet. CalVet will review your claim and may request additional documentation as needed. Once your claim is approved, you should receive an award letter detailing your disability rating and the benefits you are entitled to.
