How does my disability rating affect my benefits?
Your disability rating affects your benefits in Virginia by determining how much money you will receive monthly from the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA). A higher rating means a higher monthly benefit and a lower rating means a lower monthly benefit. The VA uses a system called Combined Disability Rating to assign ratings to veterans with service-connected disabilities. This system combines the severity of each disability and assigns a percentage rate. For example, a veteran with three disabilities may have a disability rating of 50%. This rating would be calculated by adding the percentages of each disability and dividing by the total number of disabilities (three in this example). The VA then assigns a monthly benefit to veterans with a disability rating of 10% or higher based on the number of VA-dependent family members and their financial need. The monthly benefit amount can range from $141 to $3,113. For veterans with a disability rating of 30% or higher, they may qualify for additional benefits such as an automobile allowance, clothing allowance, special monthly compensation, and/or a Vocational Rehabilitation and Employment services. Therefore, your disability rating is a major factor in determining your benefits from the VA in Virginia. The higher your rating, the more money you will receive as a benefit.
