What is an increase in disability evaluation?

An increase in disability evaluation is a process where a veteran’s disability rating is changed to a higher disability rating. This usually occurs when the veteran’s disability has increased since the initial disability rating or when a service-connected disability has been discovered through further evaluation. In Washington, a veteran can apply for an increase in their disability evaluation if they feel their disability has worsened or if they are experiencing a new disability related to their service. The root requirement for an increase in disability evaluation is medical evidence that clearly shows the disability has worsened. The veteran must fill out the VA Form 21-526EZ, Veterans Application for Increase in Compensation Based on a New Disability or Worsened Condition, which includes a comprehensive description of their current condition. The veteran must also provide medical evidence such as X-rays, laboratory tests, and doctor notes that clearly demonstrate the increase in disability. In addition, the veteran must submit their complete military medical history and any other information the VA may require. The VA will review the veteran’s application and medical evidence and determine if a higher disability rating is warranted. Depending on the severity of the disability, the VA may grant the veteran a higher disability rating. If approved, the veteran may be entitled to a higher monthly disability compensation or additional benefits such as medical care and additional financial support.
